長崎市とセントポール市との姉妹都市交流は1955年に始まる最初の日米姉妹都市交流であり、間もなく2005年で50周年を迎える。本稿では、この50年間どのような姉妹都市交流が行われてきたかを、主に長崎市における、インタビュー、訪問、資料収集から概観し、今後の展望について述べる。

The sister city relationship between Nagasaki City, Japan and Saint Paul City, Minnesota, U.S.A. started in 1955. It is the first city affiliation between a Japanese city and a U.S. city, and it has the 50th anniversary in 2005. The author reports on the contents of the intermunicipal exchanges for the 50 years after interviewing key persons, visiting related places and collecting materials in Nagasaki. The author also touches upon future perspectives of the exchange.
