Description

This article reports on an empirical investigation of the 'copula and infinitive' constructions in English and French. The focus of the study is on an asymmetric relation between the English be to + passive construction and the French etre a construction. Based on the result obtained in Uchida and Yanagi (2004), the two constructions are compared using English-French parallel data consisting of texts of fiction: the English and French parts of The Oslo Multilingual Corpus. The validity of the observations made by examining the Hansard Corpus is also established in this totally different kind of text: the etre a construction is not used as frequently as the English be to + passive construction, which reflects the intrinsic preferences demonstrated by the two languages.
