今後, 女子スポーツの発展は21世紀のスポーツ界の焦点になってくると考えられるが, 本研究は, 近年, 国際的にも注目されつつある女子サッカーに着目し, 特に実力, 人気共に世界のトップレベルにあるアメリカ女子サッカー界と日本の動向を, 歴史的視点や社会的視点からの比較によって, 今後の日本女子サッカー, 女性スポーツのあり方を検討しようとするものである。特に, 本稿では, 女性スポーツや女子サッカー関連の著書, 研究論文, 雑誌, 新聞記事, インターネットによる文献, 資料をもとに, アメリカ女子サッカー界の歴史と現状について, 主に(1)アメリカにおける女子スポーツの発展, (2)アメリカ女子サッカーの歴史, (3)女子ワールドカップと代表チームの活躍の3点から検討を加えた。その結果, 男女平等化を目指す社会の動きと共に, 1972年のTitle IX法の制定等の法的規制が強く働き, 女子スポーツ発展の土壌が急速に整備されたこと, 女子代表チームの活躍と女子サッカーのプロリーク設立(WUSA, 2001年4月, 8チームで設立)の動きに呼応して, 今や女子サッカーがアメリカでは800万人がプレーするNo. 1女子スポーツになった背景要因が明らかとなった。

The purposes of these studies are to examine a history, the present condition, and the future of Women's Soccer between Japan and the U.S.A.. In the U.S.A., women's soccer has become one of the most popular women's sports and the professional women's soccer league (WUSA, the Women's United Soccer Association) was started in April, 2001. Especially, The purpose of this paper is to examine a history and the present condition of women's soccer in the U.S.A.. The finding and discussions on the following topics are presented in this paper: 1. The development of women's soccer in the U.S.A. (1) A background of the development of women's sports in the U.S.A. (2) Title IX (3) A guide to gender equity of NAGW (National Association for Girls and Women in Sport) 2. A history of women's soccer in the U.S.A. (1) Origin of women's soccer in the U.S.A. (2) Position of women's soccer in the U.S.A. (3) Establishment of the professional women's soccer league (WUSA) 3. Women's World Cup Soccer Tournament and the national team of the U.S.A. (1) A history of women's the national team of the U.S.A. (2) A great success of Women's World Cup Soccer Tournament in 1999. (3) Treatment of women's soccer players of national team
