Description

This study examined “go + X” collocation patterns found in Japanese high school students’ argumentative essays to detect their problems in the usage of collocation. The ICNALE Written Essays was used to explore “go + X” collocation patterns commonly found in native English speakers’ writing. Then, their data were compared to the data from the Corpus of English Essays by High School Students in Okayama which was developed with the cooperation of 199 Japanese high school students. This article addresses the issue through the following comparison: (a) Frequency of the verb “go”, (b)Measures of collocation richness, (c) A part of speech frequently follows the verb “go”, (d)“Go + X” collocation patterns. The results revealed that Japanese EFL students ’knowledge about “go + X” collocation is considerably limited although the verb “go” is one of the familiar words for them. Furthermore, the investigation highlighting parts of speech indicates that Japanese EFL students underuse adverbs, adjectives, “and”, and to-infinitive as the collocates of the verb “go”.
