Possibility of utilizing patient information heard by nursing students for clinical nursing -Use of "Strength Mapping Sheet" for Psychiatric Nursing Practice

Abstract Objective: This study examines whether patient information collected by students with the use of strength mapping sheets has influenced clinical practice supervisors’ understanding of the patients and whether such information can be utilized for clinical nursing. Method: A self-administered, anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted among 16 clinical practice supervisors for psychiatric nursing practice at University A’s faculty of nursing from November 2018 to March 2019. The research items were the clinical practice supervisors’ understanding regarding face sheets and strength mapping sheets and whether they were using such sheets, as well as their response to the strength mapping sheets created by students. For analysis, simple tabulation was used for items that could be tabulated, while write-in answers were grouped. Results: A total of 15 clinical practice supervisors responded (the response rate of 93.8%, the valid response rate of 100%). A total of six clinical practice supervisors changed their perception of the patients as a result of the information collected by students using the strength mapping sheets. A total of six clinical practice supervisors shared the information among nurses, and two of them reached out to family members and doctors. Conclusion: The results suggest that the patient information obtained by students using strength mapping sheets changes clinical practice supervisors’ perceptions about the patients and that the information may contribute to clinical nursing.
