Description

The present study applied system justification theory to the problem of overtime work among Japanese teachers. A total of 135 undergraduate and graduate students participated in an experiment using a questionnaire. Participants were divided into two groups(: 1)an experiment group, presented with statements in which the threat of the school system was written, and(2)a control group, presented with statements unrelated to the threat of the school system. The results of 2(groups)×2(aspiring teachers or not)ANOVA showed that when participants who were aspiring teachers perceived the threat, they placed emphasis on social aspects of vocational value. Among participants who were not aspiring teachers, however, no group difference was found as regards social aspects of vocational value. These results suggested that there is school system justification related to teachers’overtime work. The hypotheses in this study were not completely supported because participants consisted of undergraduates and graduate students who could not perceive the threat because of not being school teachers yet. Based on the findings of this study, future research is needed with participants who are teachers.
