Abstract

This study summarizes the results of a practice seminar on Makura no Soshi (The Pillow Book) given to second-year students at Naruto University of Education. The class was held in a team-teaching (TT) format, with instructors of classical literature and Japanese-language education who shared the research methods and knowledge from their respective fields. One of the learning objectives for students was to understand classical literature without translating it into modern language. For this, the students were required to create Hama Omuraʼs annotated text. The students were also taught how to read the text aloud beforehand. The second objective was for the students to learn to read the text based on historical facts. Therefore, the class mainly focused on chapters where actual historical figures appeared. The results suggest that, based on the content of the seminar presentations and the studentsʼ remarks after the class, the method followed in this class has certain effects.
