Description

Although friction welding has already been used widely for industrial parts, reports of ceramics joining are hardly seen because ceramics are fragile easily. Moreover, since ceramics are expensive, it is possible to reduce costs by joining with relatively inexpensive metals by friction welding.

In this study, for the first time Al2O3 round bar and Aluminum casting alloy (AC8A) round bar were joined by friction welding. AC8A is typical piston material, and the material were treated by the heat treatment T6. Parameters of Joining condition are upset-time and upset-presuure. The microstructure at the interface region of joined materials was observed by SEM. From the analysis results, the damages to the microstuctures at the interface region of joined materials by upsetpressure are heavier than that by upset-time. It seems that TiC is suitable as a self-healing material used for friction welding because the oxidation reaction temperature of TiC is lower than that of SiC.
