Abstract

Objective: This study examined the effects of the fall-prevention instruction to inpatients by monitoring for four years how the inpatients provided the information about falls for medical staff and their fall risks were avoided. Methods: This study, using leaflets, has provided the educational information on how to prevent falls for the inpatients without cognitive impairments in the general ward at A university hospital since January 2010. To evaluate this instruction, this research analyzed the subjects’ answers to the anonymous questionnaire from 2010 to 2013. The items include the types of foot-wears, the nurse call system usage, the comprehension of dangerous behaviors, and their self-reports about their falls, which were assessed on a scale of one to five. This analysis used X2 test and Kruskal-Wallis test, drew multiple comparisons, and evaluated the effect sizes. Results: The fall-prevention instruction to inpatients is significantly associated with adequate footwear preparation and dangerous behavior comprehension, but not with inpatient self-reports to medical staff and the nurse call system usage. Conclusion: This study has shown that educational information supply for inpatients relates to adequate footwears preparation and increase in preventive knowledge about falls without health staff’s support, and consequently has some effects on the fall-prevention.
