A sequential injection analysis (SIA) system coupled to an inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) and a visible spectrophotometer is proposed for the successive determination of vanadium and creatinine in urine samples. A urine sample solution digested by nitric acid was passed through a mini-column packed with NOBIAS CHELATE-PA1 on the SIA system equipped with a six-way switching valve. Then, the concentrated and desalted urine sample was eluted by a 1.5 mol L–1 nitric acid, followed by ICP-MS measurement of vanadium with a detection limit of 0.62 ng L–1 at a sample loading volume of 2.0 mL into the mini-column. Creatinine in urine was determined using the same SIA system based on the Jaffe reaction with a spectrophotometric detection. The proposed SIA method with dual detection schemes was applied to determine vanadium and creatinine in urine samples, providing us with the vanadium to creatinine ratios immediately.
