Description
In this paper, I reconstruct in detail David Benatar’s asymmetry argument for anti-natalism. Specifically, I show how to properly understand his axiological asymmetry and Figure 2 . 1 , both of which are bases of his asymmetry argument. In doing so, I demonstrate that his argument should be separated into positive and negative parts. Benatar argues that the explanatory power of his asymmetry is the main support for it. Importantly, this is the only part presented positively for the axiological asymmetry. Other parts are presented negatively, in the sense that their role is simply to show the consistency and comprehensibility of his asymmetry. I will suggest that this distinction is necessary for a valid criticism of his much-discussed argument.
