Description

This study investigated the educational value of L1 Paraphrasing activity on L2 writing quality. To improve the quality of learners' manual translation into English, the present study focused on a language activity that paraphrases students' first language, referring to the rules of pre-editing for machine translation, as a writing strategy. The participating students were 39 Japanese learners of English at the beginner and intermediate levels. They, firstly, produced their L2 writing and then conducted the L1 paraphrasing activity for reestablishing their L2 sentences with low readability. The explicit teaching of paraphrasing rules during the L2 writing process positively affected their learning. Students' post-sentences demonstrated that the sentences were ordered more logically, leading them to be more understandable. The analysis revealed that L1 paraphrasing can be an effective process for producing better L2 sentences and language educators should be more aware of providing adequate paraphrasing instructions to L2 learners.
