Fried's Frail phenotype, which evaluates physical frailty, has five components: (1) Shrinking, (2) Weakness, (3) Exhaustion, (4) Slowness and (5) Low physical activity. One of the reasons for these components occurring is thought to be a decline in balance function. In this review, we first outline the methods for assessing balance function. Next, we summarize recent studies that have reported an association between balance function and physical frailty. CiNii Articles and Medline were used for the search. The keywords were set as ‘older adults’ or ‘older people’ or ‘elderly’ and ‘balance’ or ‘gravity movement’ or ‘gravity shift’ and ‘frailty’ or ‘frail’. As a result of the search, 24 articles were selected. Of these, only three articles classified the subjects into three groups: non-frail or robust, pre-frail, and frail, and mentioned the relationship with balance function. Further studies are needed, such as developing evaluation methods for balance function suitable for various fields such as medical care, nursing care and health promotion.
