本論文は，筆者が2003年，半年間，イギリスのロンドン大学（University College London: UCL）に留学した折，イギリスの言語と文化について気が付いた事を元として，イギリス英語とアメリカ英語の言語的比較を学術的に論じたものである。先ず，イギリス英語とアメリカ英語の［r］音声的特徴とイントネーションについて論じた後，イギリス英語の［t］に気息音が生ずる音声現象について，スペクトログラムを用いて実証した。次に，日本の英語教育では，あまり触れられて来なかったと思われる英米の語彙やスペルの違いについて論じ，更に，文法や文化の面について，英米比較を行い，次に，日本に大きな影響を及ぼした，3つの異文化「中国文化，イギリス文化，アメリカ文化」に論を進め，最後に，纏めとして，日本の近代化が，主としてロンドン大学を通じて，イギリス文化・文明を吸収して成された歴史的事実について論述した。

This paper is a comparative study of British English and American English based on my observations about British language and culture when I studied at the University College London (UCL) for six months in 2003. First, I discuss the phonetic characteristics of [r] and intonation in British English and American English, and then I demonstrate the phonetic phenomenon of the aspirated sound in [t] in British English using a spectrogram. Next, I discuss the differences in vocabulary and spelling between the United Kingdom and the United States, which have rarely been touched on in Japanese English education. Then, I compare aspects of American and British grammar and culture before discussing three different cultures that historically had a great influence on Japan: Chinese, British, and American cultures. Finally, as a summary, I discuss the historical role that UCL played in Japan’s modernization by educating the Japanese about the British culture and civilization.
