Abstract

Described in this paper is the global circulation of Chinese coolies’ hats between 1840-1940. The mechanism by which indentured laborers’ clothing was disseminated beyond borders is explored in association with the rise and expansion of the hat industry in East Asia. This exploration sheds light upon the impact social segregation had on consumption patterns. In the first part of this paper, an overview of the historiography of Chinese coolies is provided. Following that, firstly the passage of coolies’ hats to the Americas in 1840s-1880s is explained. The expansion of the Chinese hat industry and the impact coolies’ hats had on its market orientation is then illustrated. Finally, the focus is placed on British Malaya and Southeast Asia between 1880-1940, and the connection between social segregation and the hat market in the area is addressed.
