Description

In this paper, we perform a meta-analysis of 2,154 estimates extracted from 1,077 Mincer-type wage function models reported in 81 previous studies to examine the shape of the wage profile in China and identify its determinants during the transition period of 1981-2015. The results show that the wage effect of seniority, as measured by the partial correlation coefficient, is moderately positive throughout the transition period. However, as market-oriented reform progresses, the wage effect of seniority diminishes, and as a consequence, the wage profile tends to flatten out. The results also suggest that the shape of the wage profile may differ by corporate sector, urban or rural hukou, region, and gender. We confirm that the collected estimates contain genuine empirical evidence and conclude that seniority wage profiles and their flattening trend over time most probably existed in China during this period.
