Description

The upper Permian to Triassic Konose Group in th~ Sambosan belt of southern Kyushu is regarded to be an example of orthogeosynclinal sediments. Chert is one of the chief components in this group. It is divided into five rock types in terms of occurrence: namely relatively large chert body or LB-type, chert layers rhythmically alternated with clayey seams or RA-type, chert layers alternated with limestone or AL-type (nodular bodies of chert associated with limestone is included in this type), small body in slate or MB-type and cherty rock body transitional to・ tuff or slate or TR-type. Descriptions are given on the relationship between the rock types and their petrography and on the mode of their distribution. Genesis of the geosynclinal chert is also discussed.
