Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to review reflectively the findings of two research projects related with the history of human exchanges between Japan and Taiwan: "Doshisha and Taiwanese students", "Tracing the historical roots of Taiwan's Silicon Valley". Both of two projects are characterized by sociological research conducted in the 2000s decade when historical perceptions to Japanese colonial rule changed drastically in Taiwan, as well as so-called 'encounter-type' field work in which researchers try to utilize mutual influence between them and their informants actively. Through an 'encounter', two projectes were unexpectedly connected with each other and their raison d'être became clear.
