This study deals with the psychology of groups and individuals, related hero myths, and the symbol of the ego. An individual in a group is subject to psychological influences such as diminished autonomy, intellect, and emotional control. Le Bon posited that those influences were due to suggestion, Tardo posited that they were due to imitation, and Sherif posited that they were due to sympathy. In contrast, Freud thought that an individual projected his ego ideal onto the leader of a group and the two identified each other as members of the group. Because of Freud, a hero myth involves the mechanism of the ego ideal and identification as a member of a group. The oldest hero myth in Babylonia relates the typical deeds of the hero Marduk. When Laglan compared numerous hero stories, he identified 22 common characteristics. The current author closely examines the symbolism of heroes studied by S. Freud, O. Rank, C.G. Jung, J. Campbell, and M.L. von Franz. The current author contends that a hero symbolizes a model of the creating ego in accordance with the Self.
