日本語によることば遊びのひとつに、文字遊びがある。その代表格に位置するのは"文字絵"であるが、それとは異なって、新たに造字したり、字謎を活用したり、同音異義を利用した文字遊びがある。その多くは漢字をもとにし、細工や改変を施して行う文字遊びであるが、一部には平仮名をもとにした例も含まれている。このような漢字を中心とした文字遊びは、"感字""遊字"などとして今日も盛んに行われているが、その歴史を辿れば、古く江戸時代後期からみられ、"嘘字""鈍字"などと称されていた。本稿では、まずこれらの嘘字、鈍字にかかわる資料を取りあげて紹介するとともに、それらのことば遊びとしての性格を明確にすることを志す。続いて現代の漢字遊びについても言及していきたい。

Plays on characters and letters are a kind of play on words in Japanese. Pictures made up with hiragana-letters are its typical example. Also there are others like making new characters, riddles using characters and using homophones. Most of them use Chinese characters, but some of them use hiragana. These plays are often referred to "Yuji (遊字)" and "Kanji(感字)" today. The original form goes back to the latter half of the Edo era, and they were called "Usoji (嘘字)" and "Donji(鈍字)". At first the materials concerning "Usoji" and "Donji" are introduced, and clarified. Then the brief mention of the present-day plays on characters are also added.
