現代アイルランドの最大の劇作家オケイシーのドラマを、創作時期・主題・作風から三期に分け、I.前期、「ダブリン三部作」へ、II.中期、リアリズムからの脱皮、III.後期、武器としての笑い、のタイトルのもとで、そのドラマツルギーの特徴と変遷を考察する。

The paper traces the development of Sean O'Casey's dramaturgy,dividing his works into three phases,according to their theme,style and time of writing: I.completion of realism,beginning in his apprentice works and culminating in the Dublin trilogy II.breakaway from realism in his middle morality plays,making use of symbolic and expressionistic devices,resulting in simplified styization of characters and actions III.comic exposure of contemporary Ireland with 'the power of laughter,the weapon against evils' in his last plays,noted for their celebration of life as well as criticism of its denial
