Description

Most Japanese people recognize themselves as weak in English, and the reasons are often seen in newspapers, journals, books, and the Internet. In the prologue, those reasons are classified into four categories, and comments are given. However, under the assumption that there might be some characteristic and social difficulties in second language acquisition (=SLA), those difficulties are pursued from the viewpoints of SLA and sociolinguistics. As for the former, the property, the time to start, the environment, and input processing of SLA are discussed. As for the latter, after the language used is classified into native language and alien language, alien ones are, in addition, classified into immigrants/long-staying residents type of second language, former colony type of second language, and foreign language, and they are analyzed and discussed in terms of SLA difficulties. Lastly, in Japan where English is difficult to acquire, the use of the Internet is claimed to be effective.
