Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the total polyphenol content and antibacterial activity of leaf extracts of three olive cultivars, i.e., Chetoui, Arbequina, and Koroneiki", grown in cold climate, in three locations of Miyagi Prefecture. Total polyphenol content was highest(87.3-89.4 mg GAE/gDW) in the leaves of Chetoui and Koroneiki cultivars frown in Yamamoto-Ushibashi coastal area, south of Miyagi Prefecture. All crude extracts had antibacterial activity. In particular, two extracts of Chetoui cultivar frown in Ishinomaki-Ajishima and Yamamoto-Ushibasi areas showed the highest antibacteria activity, between 12.5-25 mg/mL, against Escherichia coli. High antibacterial activity of Chetoui leaves could be attributed to the high total polyphenol content. These results are interesting findings in the cold climate cultivation of Tunisian olives in Japan."
