Investigation on Car Driving during Pregnancy : Fact-finding Inquiry of Pregnant Woman Drivers in Sh6doshima Island

Abstract

In order to clarify the actual conditions of women drivers in pregnancy, we carried out fact-finding inquiry in Shodoshima island where numbers of women drivers are significantly large. We mailed questionnaire about car driving to 184 women who gave birth at Uchinomi Municipal Hospital in Shodoshima island and we received 138 available returns from the subjects. Result as follows : ①Among 138 women, 129 women had a driver's license and 117 women drove actually. Following results were obtained from these 117 women. ②Even after 36th gestational week, 94 women (80.3%) continued on driving. Even during emesis, 77 women (66.7%) did not stop driving. ③After pregnancy, 78 women (66.6%) noticed no difficulty or even felt the convenience in driving during pregnancy. During Pregnancy, 35 women (29.9%) experienced difficulty in driving, however only one women thought not to drive again during her next pregnancy. ④Women who drove a small car experienced difficulties more frequently. The number of drivers who fasten a seat belt were only 32 women (27.4%). ⑤Within a month after delivery 93 women (79.5%) began to drive again. These results clearly show that nowadays automobiles are indispensable in daily life, of course even for pregnant women in Shodoshima island. In conclusion we noticed importance if health guidance during pregnancy considering personal affairs including car driving.
