Abstract

Since 2013, red tides of a harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides have occured in Inokushi Bay in winter. To examine the factors causing the blooms of this species, we analyzed oceanographic conditions in winter and conducted numerical simulations with a particle tracking model. The inverse estuarine circulation, which is caused by the difference of water density between inside and outside of the bay, and diurnal vertical migration of C. polykrikoides cause accumulations of vegetative cells at the inner part of the bay, resulting in blooms in the bay area. The results also suggested that intense north winds and river flushing accelerate outflows of C. polykrikoides cells and inhibit accumulations at the inner part of the bay.
