Abstract

Pyrolysis allows the cleavage of several types of chemical bonds in a wide variety of polymers. Therefore, pyrolysis is applied in wide fields such as material science, resource utilization chemistry, environmental science, food science, forensic science, arts, and archaeology. Pyrolysis gas-chromatography (Py-GC) is an analytical method that allows in-line pyrolysis and GC analysis of pyrolyzates by using microgram samples, thus this technique is often applied in wide fields. We have developed feedstock recycling technologies for polymeric materials such as waste plastics by employing Py-GC. In this article, we report applications of the tandem micro-reactor-GC system, which is a comparatively new Py-GC system, for the development of pyrolytic feedstock recovery processes for poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), polycarbonate (PC), and polyurethane elastomer (PUE).
