<p>Concentrated sulfuric acid /tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) hydrolysis system efficiently converts lignocellulose into monosaccharides as well as tert-butyl alcohol lignin (TBL) with thermal plasticity and high solubility in common organic solvent. However, chemical structure of the TBL and reaction mechanism in this system are still unclear. In this study, nitrobenzene oxidation of TBL and concentrated sulfuric acid / TBA treatment using a lignin model compound (methyl guaiacol) were performed to clarify chemical structure of TBL. The tert-butyl and tert-octyl group were incorporated into aromatic nuclei in the lignin in nitrobenzene oxidation analysis. Lignin model experiment indicated that tert-butyl group was introduced into methyl guaiacol, producing two products, and these were fractionated using HPLC system to determine chemical structure of TBL in NMR analysis.</p>
