Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of chemoradiotherapy (CRT) for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the anorectal region.

Methods: Fifteen patients with anorectal SCC who underwent CRT were included, and their outcomes were retrospectively evaluated.

Results: Primary tumors were T1 in 1 case, T2 in 8 cases, and T3 in 6 cases. All patients could complete radiotherapy, but 6 patients received a reduced dose of chemotherapy, and 3 patients had Grade 3 or higher side effects. Local response was CR in 15 patients, but recurrence occurred in 4 patients (26.7%). There was one case (10%) of recurrence in patients who did not reduce chemotherapy, and no recurrence in patients with T2 tumor or smaller who did not reduce chemotherapy. The recurrence site was local in all cases. All 3 patients who relapsed within 1 year after CR were treated with reduced doses of chemotherapy. The prognosis was death from primary cancer in 3 cases. Nine patients are alive and disease-free.

Conclusions: CRT for anorectal SCC can be safely performed and is expected to be curative. However, in cases with reduced chemotherapy, follow-up should be considered for early local recurrence.
