Abstract

type:text

The Blue Flag (BF) certification has gained international recognition as an environmental certification for beaches, marinas, and sightseeing eco-boats. To achieve BF status, 33 standards related to environmental education, water quality, environmental management, and safety and risk assessment have to be met. This requires the cooperation of various entities, including citizens. In Japan, five beaches are currently BF certified. This study, therefore, explores the processes and activities carried out by these beaches to maintain their BF status from the time of acquiring the certification, through interviews and observing the processes followed. The acquisition of BF status has promoted multi-principal collaboration among all five beaches, creating pride among organizations involved in marine environmental conservation and safety management, and further promoting inclusive initiatives for environmentally sound conservation practices.
