Abstract

Since 2007, the pretreatment process for OEM aluminum wheel painting has completely shifted from hexavalent-chromium-contained chromate conversion coating to chromium-free due to ELV enforcement. Hexavalent chromium substitutes are either zirconium or titanium compounds, but neither has the same sacrificial corrosion resistance feature that is characteristic of hexavalent chromium. The key technology to meet OEM paint performance requirements with chromium-free pretreatment processes is to install an acid pickling stage in between the alkaline degreasing and chromium-free conversion coating stages. Furthermore, to meet the latest requirements for environmental-friendly processes and higher designable paint performance, one solution is proposed using Bulk Chemical’s chromium-free technology and its process control system.
