Abstract

This study aimed to establish a cultivation method for reducing potassium (K) content rate while maintaining plant growth in turnip and radish, which are root vegetables, for kidney disease dialysis patients with limited K intake. The two treatment groups were reduced K applications throughout the growth period and from the halfway point onwards in hydroponic cultivation. In the turnip, the greatest decrease in K content rate while maintaining plant growth was due to treatment with the K concentration in the hydroponic solution adjusted to 1/10 of the control (potassium concentration;0.3 mM) for 30 days before harvest. This treatment reduced the K content rate by 70.1 % in the hypocotyl and 94.8 % in the leaves and stems compared to the control. In radish, the greatest decrease in K content rate while maintaining plant growth was in the treatment group where no K was added to the hydroponic solution for 15 days before harvest. The K content rate was reduced by 80.0 % in the hypocotyl and 92.2 % in the leaves and stems compared to the control. From these results, it was cleared that cultivating turnip and radish in a hydroponic solution with reduced K during the last 30 % of whole growth period could reduce the crop K content without affecting plant growth.
