S・K・ランガーの芸術哲学は、これまで主として認識論の枠組み内で論じられてきた。ランガーによれば芸術とは、 無定形で混沌とした人間感情をシンボル(仮象)化し、客観的に知覚できるように構造化したものである。これを通してわれわれは、感情そのものについての深い洞察を得る。すなわち感情について「知る」ことになる。では、この仮象はいつ、どこに発生するのであろうか。音楽を聴いているまさにその最中に、あらゆる瞬間、聴き手の内部にそれは発生する。本研究は、仮象の中に時間的契機を導入し、音楽を行為、すなわち「すること」と見なす立場から、認識論的解釈ではこれまで扱われてこなかった面をランガーの著述の中に探ることを目的とする。

S. K. Langer's philosophy of art has been mainly discussed within the framework of epistemology. Langer thinks art symbolizes human feeling that is amorphous and chaotic, presents it as semblance, and formulates it. We gain an insight into feeling itself, know about feeling, through art symbol. Then, when and where does this semblance occur? While one is listening to music now, it occurs in every moment and inside the listener. The purpose of this study is to find out some phases that have not been dealt with in epistemology in Langer's writing, from the viewpoint of the theory that music is an action, introducing the temporal moment into the event of semblance.
