This study deals with the myth of Yamato Takeru, told in Kojiki (712). He was born as a crown prince under the12th Emperor Keikou.Takeru is the only person whose entire life history was described. Thus, he is considered to be a representativecharacter who lived during the reign of an emperor and who was symbolically and psychologically influenced bythe emperor.The current work closely examines Takeru’s symbolism during his birth and his departure to the west areaof Kumaso. This work also discusses the psychological meaning of the myth of Takeru in terms of (1) itsclose relationship to symbolism of the mother archetype, (2) Takeru as a demigod hero, and (3) Takeru as arepresentative of the child archetype.
