Abstract

324 images of portraiture of the Joseon era were collected from two field surveys and three related books, and were divided into nine categories: head, bust, half-body, 3/4 body, full-body chair sitting, full-body floor sitting, full-body standing, high priest’s chair sitting, and high priest’s floor sitting. In addition, we attempted to consider the compositional features of Korean portraiture by measuring the overhead space, position of eyes, head axis, center position of the lower abdomen, underfoot space, and boundary position between the floor and the wall. In some head and bust images, the upper part is cut off, and the position of the eyes is lower than the center of the picture. The cause is thought to be the tall crown cap. The reason why many similar works are seen in Korean portraiture is that there were strict rules on how to draw/paint them. However, it is considered that there were some changes in the layout over time, because there are variations in the survey numeral value, and some of full-body works with no space above and below, in the late dynasty of Korea and the 20th century.
