Abstract

This paper aims to identify the aspects of cross-cultural adaptation process of foreign workers in order to keep them working in the Japanese hospitality industry. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with foreign workers, and the data obtained were analyzed using a "modified grounded theory approach <M-GTA>". As a result, the following issues were identified for cross-cultural adaptation in the Japanese hospitality industry: "linguistic behavior unique to the Japanese language," "dealing with Japanese customers," and "building human relations in the workplace". In order to cope with these challenges and to adapt to the different culture of Japan, it became clear that they combine Japanese culture and their own culture according to the role and the situation, based on the ingenuity of relationship building, support from the hospitality industry, and support from the region of Okinawa. This paper will provide suggestions on foreign workers in different cultures, Japanese language education in the hospitality industry, and practical implications for the industry.
