Abstract
<p>As an effective method to protect against damage from a terrorist attack or accidental explosion, important facilities can be constructed below ground. To design such blast resistant belowground structures, response of structures under blast load through absorbing systems should be clarified. In this study, close-in explosion tests of reinforced mortar beams with absorbing layers composed by sand and EPS were conducted. From results of tests, absorbing layers could prevent beams from local failure, and slight bending deformation was caused in the beams.When an EPS block was compressed completely, residual displacement of the beam was larger than that in the case absorbing layers without an EPS block.</p>
