説明
This paper first aims to clarify what sedation is and then introduces the points of moral debate concerning sedation. First, I show that sedation can be broadly defined as follows: Namely, sedation is the actual reduction in consciousness caused by drugs that physicians Administer in order to relieve distress stemming from serious symptoms or existential distress. Next, I explain how sedation differs from general anesthesia, analgesia, and euthanasia, respectively. Then I will introduce the categories of sedation. Sedation can be divided into several types along four axes:continuous or intermittent, deep or light, proportionate or direct, and double or single effect. However, I also explain that some people deny that proportionate sedation and/or double-effect sedation should be called sedation in the first place. These people should object to the broad definition of sedation I introduced above. Finally, with these distinctions in mind, I will review the ethical issues. I will explain the points of moral debate concerning sedation by dividing them into those related to the balance between the positive and negative effects of the procedure and those related to the physicians' intention.
