- The Emotional Experiences of Nursing Students Related to Aging with “CAI Life Event Game”

The objective of this research is to investigate the effective educational methods with Computer-Aided Instruction (CAI) related to aging. Junior nursing students simulated the cosmetic effects of aging using make-up. We compared their emotional experiences with thirteen life independent simulation levels among two groups. One group comprising students had aging make-up with a hair-wig, and the other comprising students without make-up but with a hair-wig. Results showed that the groups displayed different emotional experiences. At the independent simulation level, the aging make-up group showed symptoms of anger, death-wishes, shame, apathy and significant discomfort. At the semi-independent level, the make-up group showed symptoms of despair and the non make-up group had pleasantness. At the dependent level, the no make-up group displayed symptoms of anxiety,anger,shame and gloom. The results were however not significant. At the re-independent level both groups showed signs of relief, satisfaction,confidence and courage. Students who did aging make-up were able to more recognize the perceived disadvantages of self-aging especially when the simulation had negative events such as; losing familiarity in ones neighborhood, loss of their elderly wishes, and changes among their supporters. The make-up groups displayed more strong emotional experiences. Using CAI experiences with aging make-up let the nursing students better understand the emotions of aging and enhanced their learning more than just taking an aging class lecture.
