Abstract

The coastal railways are third sector companies instituted by the co-funding of Japan national railways (JNR), local governments, and companies advanced in the coastal areas. Coastal railways have declined freight volume due to deteriorating heavy industry and shift to road transport. Response for a decreasing freight transport revenues, coastal railways have increased incidental revenues consist of mainly consigned operation from Japan Freight railway (JR Freight). Coastal railways should promote cooperation with JR Freight as the incidental revenues is important to management of them.
