Men and masculinity studies （MMS） has been spread mainly in Europe, the United States and Australia since the 1970s. In Japan, MMS broadened in the 1990s. However, much less work has been done on theoretical and empirical examination of men and masculinity. It is pointed out that there are separations between MMS and other gender/sexuality studies in terms of both theory and practice. By reviewing its trends, this article aims to present future directions of theoretical perspectives in MMS. The following findings are revealed. MMS has an adherence to social-structural and modernist frameworks, but recent years have seen challenges to this tendency which hardly questions fixed categorizing of men and masculinity. Future research on MMS theorizing needs to be done by critically reconsidering what is taken granted for in concepts of men and masculinity. To conclude, I present three ways to work on this issue. First, it is necessary to rely on poststructural feminism in theorizing men and masculinity. Second, while exploring poststructural accounts, it is also important to find out how to use effectively past frameworks, not reject them all. Third, we need to adopt phenomenology and new materialism into MMS to grasp lived experiences and materiality.
