Abstract

Travel modes for airport access should be fast and punctual; however, road-based travel tends to be less punctual than railways due to road congestion. Road-based transport users generally arrive at an airport early to be on time for boarding, and may therefore stay there for an extended period of time; however, the actual situation remains unknown. This study aims to: 1) develop a method for estimating the time spent at an airport using GPS data, and 2) analyze the spent time differences among airports and access modes. The target airports are Kumamoto Airport, without a railway; and Haneda Airport, with various access modes. The results revealed that road-based transport users spent longer at the airport than railway users. The method and results could be useful for evaluating an airport access railway project in the future.
