説明

This study investigated the occurrence conditions of polar mesocyclones over the Sea of Japan in winter using the Japanese 55-year Reanalysis (JRA-55) data, the Meso-Scale Model (MSM) data, surface and upper weather charts provid-ed by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and satellite images. The near-surface wind shear lines formed before a polar mesocyclone appeared. The wind shear lines between the two air masses were characterized by two patterns, that is a strong baroclinic pattern and a weak baroclinic pattern. When the strong baroclinic pattern prevailed, two air masses had large differences in air temperature and equivalent potential temperature (θe). This situation with the strong baro-clinic pattern led to the formation of a local frontal zone. Therefore, local baroclinic instability is considered to cause a disturbance which develops into a polar mesocyclone. On the other hand, in the case of the weak baroclinic pattern, two air masses didn’t have much difference in air temperature and θe. However, the difference of wind directions is much greater compared with the strong pattern. Therefore, the disturbance with the weak baroclinic pattern is thought to be initiated mostly by barotropic instability, which tends to develop into polar mosocyclones.
