In 2020, Ryotokuji University decided to add English Conversation and Basic English courses to the English language learning curriculum starting in 2022. The introduction of these two subjects was deemed desirable based on the questionnaire survey conducted in 2021. However, the survey conducted in 2022 revealed that only 9 students chose English Conversation while 150 students selected Basic English courses. Although the maximum number of students in the survey answered that they aspired to improve their speaking skills, they appeared to have chosen another subject because they are not confident about their English speaking ability. Therefore, we need to inform them that the instructors would conduct the class according to students’ English proficiency and relieve their anxiety. As for Basic English courses, more classes are needed because significantly more students selected this course than we had expected, and the instructors could not suitably guide them in their studies.
