Abstract

Articles

Generally, suffixes attach to bases and form deribatives. However, there are some cases that suffixes attach to phrasal level. This phenomenon is called “phrasal compound”. This thesis, focusing on phrasal suffixes attached to continuative forms of verbs, “-tate”, “-kake”, “-ppanashi”, “-kkiri”, “-houdai”, “-dooshi”, “-makuri”, “-gachi”, “-sugi”, “-me”,“-gimi” and “-sou ”, described and indicated what kinds of nature they have from the viewpoint of part of speech and what meanings phrasal suffixes expressed . Firstly, according to the point of part of speech, it stated that the above phrasal suffixes are not nominal suffixes, but equivalent to third adjective suffixes and nominal adjective suffixes. Secondly, it described how nominal suffixes, third adjective suffixes and nominal adjective suffixes were sorted by nominality in descending order, based on the continuity of part of speech. Furthermore, it appeared that suffixes of more nominality like “-ppanashi”, which are being used in front of “ga” case, and suffixes of less nominality like “-gachi”, which are not being used in front of “ga” case, are both existed in third adjective suffixes. Thirdly, the question of the usage of “wo” or “no” had been pointed out in the representation of argument. It showed that in third adjective suffixes, there are suffixes like “-ppanashi” whose argument can be represented by either “no” case or “wo” case, while there are also suffixes like “-gachi” whose argument can be solely represented by “wo” case. Moreover, it stated that “phrasal compound” occurred on suffixes of weak nominality according to the viewpoint of occurrence of “wo” case. Furthermore, it appeared that the above-mentioned suffixes have some specific meanings of “anterior”, “halfway”, “resultative / neglection”, “durative”, “degree”, “repetition”, “nature and state tendency” and “appearance”. Finally, investigation was carried out on the relationship between the meaning of these suffixes and nominality. Putting the meanings of these suffixes in descending order according to the nominality, it would be “anterior, halfway”, “durative, resultative / neglection”, “degree, repetition”, “nature and state tendency” and “appearance”. It stated that these meanings are not discrete, but linked to each other according to the above order of nominality.
