Abstract

If the infrastructure used in a community focuses only on technical features in its testing, it may be difficult to take root in the community after the testing. In this work, we explored the role that local infrastructure should play in the future, referring to the concept of “engagement” as a necessary element for infrastructure, which is not a function directly provided by infrastructure to users, but rather a way to bring about change in the users themselves. In Miura area, we conducted experimental design research in which insights about “engagement” gained from interactions with locals were expressed as prototypes that could be experienced, and get feedback from people. Three prototypes were created and tested with locals, resulting in three patterns of “engagement” that infrastructure in the community should have.
