Abstract
Music has long had a close relationship with the space in which it is performed, and the electroacoustic technology that emerged in the 20th century led to experiments in music production using multichannel tape recorders and numerous loudspeakers to place sounds at various locations in the space, creating works that would produce a more effective space of sound. The evolution of digital technology has developed such efforts for stereophonic sound since the 2000s. They have been used in the conventional 2-channel stereo and 5.1-channel stereo systems, such as 22.2 multi-channel sound developed by NHK as 3D audio with playback channels in the height direction in addition to the front/back/left/right, and Dolby Atmos for movie theater sound. The new system enables the expression of spatial sound that could not be realized with traditional 2-channel stereo or 5.1 surround sound. This paper provides an overview of these 3D audio systems and the content production methods for stereophonic sound.
