Abstract

This study examined the effects of cognitive training by e-sports on the elderly and their willingness to participate in training. Methods: Twelve healthy elderly subjects played "Puyo Puyo" in a competitive format for 2 months (8 sessions). The effects of the training were analyzed by evaluating the subjects with the MMSE, CPT, Stroop test, and TMT before and after the training, and by evaluating the subjects with the Stroop test and TMT at 4 months after the training. In addition, a questionnaire survey on participation was conducted at the end of the training period. In order to confirm the learning effect of the test, six healthy elderly subjects who did not participate in the training were evaluated by the MMSE, Stroop test, and TMT. Results and Discussion: There were significant differences in the number of correct responses to the Stroop test and the time required to perform the TMT in the trained group compared to the untrained group. No significant differences were found in the untrained group. The questionnaire results indicated that the participants were motivated to participate in the training, suggesting that e-sports cognitive training improves general attentional function in healthy elderly people and encourages their active participation in the training.
