Description

Nasal packing is commonly used to control bleeding and has the effect of a wet dressing following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). From the 2000's, calcium alginate dressings have been used to pack the middle meatus following ESS. Calcium alginate is a flocculent non-absorbable packing that shows a potent hemostatic effect, and acts as a wet dressing by absorbing and gelling the wound exudate. Until recently, Sorbsan® (calcium alginate) was commonly used in Japan for postoperative nasal dressing. Unfortunately, sale of Sorbsan® was discontinued in 2020, and we started collaborating the same year with Zuiko Medical corporation (Osaka, Japan.) for developing the new calcium alginate material Plus moist HS-W®, and this product was launched in the market in Japan in 2022. Plus moist HS-W® can be washed out of the nasal cavity by self saline irrigation as it is easily gellable and dispersible. The remnant gel can be easily removed using only suction tube. Satisfactory middle meatus epithelization has been reported to be observed following removal of Plus moist HS-W®. Plus moist HS-W® offers promise for use as a standard material for post operative nasal dressing.
