Abstract

Historical roads can be said to be a valuable local resource where you can experience Japanese history and culture. However, many historic roads have not been designated as preservation districts for groups of traditional buildings, and there are no laws, ordinances, or rules for conservation, so it is difficult to continue to preserve the scenery of historic roads. The purpose of this study is to examine how to preserve the scenery of historical roads with historical landscapes that are not designated as such preservation districts for groups of traditional buildings. Then, taking Koya Kaido in Kawachinagano City, Osaka Prefecture as an example, we investigated the changes in landscape and efforts by the government and residents. As a result, we were able to clarify how to preserve the scenery of historical roads residents take the lead in landscape preservation, even if they are not positioned as preservation districts for groups of traditional buildings.
