Abstract

Since 1867 when Yamate and Uchikoshi district of Yokohama City was opened to the public as a detention facility for foreigners, bluff retaining walls have been used as a countermeasure against cliffs. However, in the residential areas of Yokohama City, the deterioration of stone materials has progressed, and heavy rains have caused the collapse of bluff retaining walls. In this study, we investigated the deformation of the bluff retaining wall in Yamate area and conducted a model shaking table test in preparation for future mega-earthquakes and heavy rains. As a result, it was clarified that steep retaining walls are very dangerous and that reinforcement measures using anchors are effective.
